French markets set to return.

Popular continental markets are returning this week.

They will be in North Shields town centre today, Wallsend on Friday and Whitley Bay on Saturday.

This year a new operator is bringing the best of French goods as well as a taste of Scotland.

Food on offer includes charcuterie, bread, cheese, biscuits from Brittany, and olives. From Scotland there will be wine, haggis, shortbread, clootie pudding, sweets and mustards.

Coun Jim Allan, the council's cabinet member for regeneration, said: "Local residents tell us the markets are a good addition to the fine range of goods already on offer in our towns.

"This is all about offering that bit extra to people, so they will visit our town centres and keep them viable. If shoppers are attracted by the market, there's a good chance they will take a look at other shops."
