French, U.S. Buy U.K. TV Assets

France's Canal Plus and Generale d'Images Group, joining with ABC/Capital Cities and the U.S. Sports cable network ESPN, have acquired the TV, cable, production and satellite operations of Britain's W.H. Smith.

The latter is also selling its interests in The European Sports Network, in which Canal Plus/Generale d'Images and ESPN now take equal stakes. In the future, other European partners may be allowed to invest.

The European Sports Network reaches some 22 million TV households in Europe and is broadcast in four languages.

Included in the Smith acquisition is Lifestyle, an English-language service aimed at women; Cablejukebox, a special request video clip service, and four London-based production and post-production services.

Assets further include two transponders on the Astra 1A satellite, which transmits The European Sports Network and Lifestyle.
