Freightline, UAW end dispute.

Negotiators for the Freightliner Corp. and Local 5285 of the United Automobile Workers ended a 17-day work stoppage when they agreed to a 3-year labor contract, covering some 1,000 production workers at the company's truck assembly plant in Mt. Holly, NC. The dispute began after the parties, who were negotiating their first collective bargaining agreement, were unable to agree on wage and benefit terms and the resolution of alleged unfair labor practices.

According to the union's chief negotiator, "The agreement brings Mt. Holly Freightliner workers to wage parity with other Freightliner workers and provides major gains in benefits and worker rights to UAW members . . ." The pact calls for wage increases of 8.7 percent retroactive to 1990 and 1991, an additional 8.7 percent in 1992, and 35 cents an hour in 1993 and 1994. Other terms include resolution of unfair labor practice charges, including rehiring an employee who was allegedly fired for union activities; and establishment of a full-time, paid union health and safety representative.
