Freewest Resources Canada Inc. winter exploration update.

MONTREAL--(BUSINESS WIRE)--March 8, 1996--FREEWEST RESOURCES (ME, TSE:FWR) Freewest Resources Canada Inc. is pleased to report on its exploration programs:

Barry Project, Quevillon, Quebec - Gold Murgor Resources Inc., our joint venture partner in a block of claims adjacent to the Murgor gold discovery of 1994, has completed the drilling of five holes collared on the jointly held property and results have been reported by Murgor on March 7, 1996. Four new gold zones have been discovered on the project. The best intersection reported by Murgor is 41.7 feet grading 0.18 opt gold in hole MB-45. Additional drilling is scheduled for March 1996.

Benoist Property, Quevillon, Quebec - Gold A 2000 metre drilling program to test for lateral extensions at the 400-metre level on the Lake Pusticamica Deposit (531,278 tons at a grade of 0.16 opt gold), managed by Murgor who can earn a 50 percent interest in the property, is underway. Drilling on the east side of the deposit, in hole 96-2 intersected the Pusticamica mineralized zone for the interval of 376.4 to 415.7 metres. This 39.3 metre intersection is centered around the 350-metre level and reflects an east extension of the zone, at this level of some 50 metres. Previous drilling on this same section, 5+00W, had tested the zone to the 150-metre level. Assays are not yet available.

Berge Property, Casa Berardi, Quebec - Gold The winter drill program is now complete and Freewest is encouraged by the initial results. A strong zone of shearing, silica alteration and pyrite mineralization was encountered in the three holes. Anomalous gold values up to 1.5 g/t gold were intersected in the zone. Geophysical data reinterpretation with additional drilling is planned.

Urban Property, Quevillon, Quebec - Gold Drilling is ongoing on this joint venture property with Inmet Corp. The objective of the program is to test I.P. geophysical anomalies in areas of known gold mineralization.

Minedel-Spina Property, Timmins, Ontario - Gold A combined magnetic and I. P. geophysical survey has been completed on this property located some 15 km southwest of Timmins, adjoining Band-Ore Resources Ltd.'s Thorne property where an intersection of 0.255 opt gold over 60 feet was announced on February 19, 1996.

The purpose of the program was to identify drill targets within the Bristol Fault Zone which traverses the northern part of the property and is a major splay off the Destor-Porcupine Fault Zone. The magnetics outlined 2.1 km of the Bristol Fault Zone on the property. Two zones of strong chargeability have been identified within the fault and a third zone has been identified 225 metres south of the fault. These previously unknown and untested chargeability zones are considered high priority gold targets and Freewest is currently planning an aggressive drill program.

Powell Property, Matachewan, Ontario - Gold The seven hole drill program on that property is now complete and Freewest and its 50 percent joint venture partner Detector resources Ltd. are very encouraged by the results. The drilling was focused on the Camking Zone which consists of brecciated, albitized greywackes and turbidites with pyrite mineralization and quartz-carbonate veining associated with carbonatized feldspar porphyry dykes. The zone, averaging 15 metres wide, has been traced by seven drill holes over a strike length of 250 metres and, on one section, to a vertical depth of 150 metres. The best results were 2.1 g/t gold over 14.8 metres (including 3.5 g/t gold over 3.6 metres), 1.2 g/t gold over 21.5 metres (including 3.0 g/t gold over 4.4 metres) and 1.2 g/t gold over 17.7 metres. A follow-up drill program is slated for the Spring.

McCuaig Property, Red Lake, Ontario - Gold Drilling is in progress to test I.P. geophysical anomalies and known gold occurrences on this centrally located property where Freewest can earn a 50 percent interest from Golden Tag Resources Ltd. Five drill holes have been completed and all have intersected mineralisation. Assays are expected to be available within two weeks.

Wisconsin, United States - Copper-Zinc Drilling is underway on this property jointly held with Sharpe Energy and Resources Ltd. to test geophysical targets. The second hole encountered a stringer zone of sulphides. The third hole is presently being drilled on the same anomaly.

Labrador, Newfoundland - Nickel-Copper The airborne geophysical surveys are nearly completed on the 21 claim blocks held by Freewest and its joint ventures partners. Following reception of the reports and maps, ground follow-up is planned.

Botswana, Africa - Nickel-Copper An airborne aeromagnetic survey is planned for late Spring or early Summer for the large permits held by Freewest and Fancamp Resources Inc.
