Free smoking cessation program offered.


The Massachusetts Department of Public Health is offering four weeks of free nicotine patches to veterans and their families who want to quit smoking. The offer ends June 30. For more information, call the Massachusetts Smokers Helpline at (800) TRY-TO-STOP (879-86-7867) or visit at

Main South American Legion Post 341 has elected officers for 2009-2010. They are: Francis X. Dowd, commander; Art Cronin, senior vice commander; Ron Doyle, finance officer; Jim Dowd, adjutant; Ben Hayes, chaplain; Randy Smith, sergeant-at-arms; Dee Diveley, judge advocate; Bill Fay, graves registration officer; Paul Towler, service officer; John McAuliffe, Americanism officer; and Bill Durkan, historian.

Elected to the executive board are: Carl Fernberg, Tom Fleming, Paul Gingras, Tom Harding, Ken Howard, Skip Johnson, Bob Kalagher, Wayne Naoum, Ray Reynolds, Wayne Rodwill, Ed St. Amand, Bill Sylvester and Don "Hawk" Vosburg.

At the Detachment of Massachusetts Sons of The American Legion State Convention, Worcester resident David L. Johnson, Jr. was elected detachment commander. David is also commander of Vernon Hill Squadron 435 SAL.

Other area residents who were elected detachment officers were Mark McCue, vice commander and Pat Mc Keon, assistant-adjutant, both from Cherry Valley Squadron 443 SAL; and Phil Samko, chaplain, Tom Friend, historian and Richard Smalley, sergeant-at-arms, all three from Vernon Hill Squadron 435 SAL.

William H. Moore has been awarded the "Seven Seals Award" at the 253rd Combat Comm Group Facility. The award is given to individuals who show admirable leadership and initiative in support of the men and women who serve America in the National Guard and Reserve.


The Polish American Veterans of Worcester and its Auxiliary will meet at 6:30 p.m. at St. Anthony's Hall at Our Lady of Czestochowa, 34 Ward St., Worcester. The trustees will meet at 6. Refreshments will be served.

Vernon Hill American Legion Post 435 meets at 7:30 p.m. at post quarters, 267 Providence St., Worcester. The executive board will meet at 6:30.

Vietnam Veterans of America Chapter 907, will meet at 7 p.m. at Gardner American Legion Post 129, 22 Elm St., Gardner. The executive board will meet at 6.

Oliver Ashton American Legion Post 343 will meet at 7:30 p.m. at 118 Church Ave., Northbridge.


Central Mass Yoga Institute will offer free yoga classes for combat veterans at 11 a.m. at the institute, 45 Sterling St., No. 28, West Boylston. All veterans are welcome; no advance registration is necessary.


Massachusetts Veterans Inc., will hold the 4th annual Central Massachusetts Stand Down from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. at 69 Grove St., Worcester. For more information or to preregister, call Joe Boylan at (508) 791-0956, ext. 127, or e-mail

The Disabled American Veterans mobile van and DAV National Service Officers will assist veterans and dependents in filing claims and appeals to the Veterans Administration from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the Worcester Veterans Center, 691 Grafton St., Worcester. Bring your claim and Social Security numbers along with any documentation you may have to support your case.

George L. Thorng American Legion Post 404 will hold bingo at 7 p.m. at South Barre Road, Barre. Doors will open at 5:30. Proceeds after payout will benefit the post.
