Free labour housing from December under UAE decree.
A new decree issued by the UAE's Ministry of Human Resources and Emiratisation (MOHRE) stipulates free housing for labourers paid less than $544.5 (AED2,000) per month.
The decree, applicable to companies that hire more than 50 workers, will take effect this December.
According to WAM , the decree will also lay out the necessary measures to be taken against employers that disobey or violate the suggested terms and regulations.
Saqr Ghobash, the UAE's Minister of Human Resources and Emiratisation, said the decree follows recent studies carried out in the labour market.
"Experts spent several months studying the living conditions of workers who have been listed in the ministry's classifications system as low-skill labourers," he added.
"The ministry follows up on the workers' housing [through] inspectional visits and takes legal action against violating facilities."
Labour accommodations with fewer than 500 tenants must meet the criteria and service standards as required by a Ministerial Decree issued in 2014.
MOHRE grants local authorities the ability to "set rules and regulations that benefit workers' well-being" as well.
Therefore, companies that employ less than 50 workers, or workers paid more than $544.5, must also be able "to enjoy proper accommodation", with regular inspections planned to ensure housing standards are met.
