Free consolation flights for exam flunkers.

Budget airline Ryanair is today offering free flights to Midland students who have failed their A levels.

While tens of thousands of teenagers will be celebrating their passes, the airline has invited any student with a U-grade to turn up with their results slip at Bar Risa in Birmingham's Broad Street and collect a free flight.

A Ryanair spokesman said: "The idea is that it's results day, and a nerve-wracking day for a lot of young people. Some will be very, very happy and will get to go to quite famous universities and people who didn't get good grades will be very disappointed.

"So forget about going to Oxford or Cambridge, and instead enjoy Milan, Poznan or Alicante."

He denied that the company was rewarding failure. "We would say we are making sure everyone has something to smile about, no matter how they have done.

"There are no catches, anybody who brings along a results slip to Bar Risa, on Broad Street, showing a 'U' grade in any subject gets a fare-free flight."

The U-graders can claim a return trip from East Midlands airport or Birmingham International within a two-month period.
