Fraud or waste are never acceptable.

YOUR correspondent Peter Curtis (Voice of the North, April 28) asks what my position is on the European Commission reclaiming misspent farming subsidies from member states where the rules are shown to have been broken. I think the Commission is absolutely correct to demand that taxpayers' money is spent according to the rules.

Where this is not the case, it is right that the money is reclaimed so that it can be put to good use elsewhere.

The alternative is to blindly hand out money, never check what it is spent on and never do anything to stop fraud or waste.

That is not acceptable within the United Kingdom and it is rightly not acceptable at a European level either.
