Frankfurt consortium goes Stateside.

A German-led consortium has secured a service contract from the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey to manage baggage cart logistics at Newark International Airport in the US.

The consortium, called the Airport Carts Limited Liability Company (ACLLC), comprises the Frankfurt Airport Company (FAG), and CIVAS Civil Aviation Security Services GmbH, both with 40%, and Hudson General, a US ground handling service provider now owned wholly by Lufthansa's GlobeGround subsidiary.

FAG and CIVAS already cooperate at Frankfurt Airport through a joint venture company, GSL, which handles baggage cart logistics and maintenance for more than 6,000 carts. Under the contract, ACLLC will provide some 3,000 German-made baggage carts at Newark.

The deal has obviously whetted the appetite of executives at FAG. "Following the success of this contract, the Frankfurt Airport Company will be aggressively pursuing airport baggage cart contracts at other US and international airports," confirmed Bernd Struck, Senior Vice President of FAG's Travel and Trade, Services and Facilities division.
