France plays ping-pong diplomatic protest game over Russian plane incident.

PARIS, Oct 20 (KUNA) -- France retaliated here Tuesday to a Russian summons of the French ambassador to Moscow on Monday by summoning Moscow's envoy to Paris here to receive a complaint, diplomatic sources confirmed. The sources, requesting anonymity, said that the Russian Ambassador was summoned during Tuesday morning to hear that Paris was unhappy as the French ambassador to Russia was summoned over an alleged incident involving a French air force plane and a Russian passenger plane carrying an official delegation. The incident near the Swiss border was denied by France, which said the fighter jet that approached closely the Russian plane was Swiss and not French. But this information came too late to prevent a "misdirected" Russian protest Monday and a subsequent riposte "ping-pong" style by France the following day. The incident is now viewed as closed and relations between the two countries are not understood to be damaged in any way and contacts are expected to continue normally on common-interest "hot topics" like Syria, the Middle East and the Ukraine.
