Framing a perfect idea for upcycling.

THERE'S a shop around the corner from Suzi Dorey in Cardiff that she just can't resist having a regular rummage around.

She says: "It's where I saw the old window frames. I kept seeing them outside the shop on Rose Street and thinking, 'I could do something with those'. I thought they were a beautiful shape.

"I passed the windows for sale for two weeks until the idea came to turn them into garden mirrors."

And she's so glad she did go in and buy the windows, as now Suzi and her garden mirrors are the WalesOnline Property Awards Upcycle Item of the Year, in association with Waterstone Homes.

The 37-year-old says: "I am thrilled to win, can't believe it, it's fantastic news! I really enjoyed upcycling the windows.

"I wanted to improve the side return along the side of our house, and when I saw the old window frames, an idea started to form as to how I could upcycle them to be part of the refurbishment."

She transformed the old frames into three stylish garden mirrors.

Suzi kept the original small panes of glass, but sprayed the back of them with mirror effect spray, a product by Rust-oleun.

She says: "This added to the aged, distressed and dappled look of the frame with white outdoor to protect it. I found old plant pots at jumble sales and in charity shops for the plants and flowers."

Suzi's partner, although thinking she was "a bit bonkers" arriving home with vintage window frames, assisted with the construction of the shelf at the bottom of each unit, and securing the window mirrors on to the wall.

The owner of jewellery website suzidoreydesign.com says: "Now I have a much nicer view for washing up - the mirrors reflect our main garden, so I can see it from the sink."

Congratulations Suzi, hope your prize of the new book by Farrow and Ball called How to Decorate inspires you to keep upcycling.
