Frail Liza has stroke in hospital.

SINGER Liza Minnelli has suffered a stroke while awaiting surgery.

Liza, 54, had been awaiting back and hip operations in a New York hospital when she had the stroke.

It follows years of ill health including drink and drug problems in a life which has mirrored that of her tragic mother, Judy Garland.

Garland died aged 47 from a drugs overdose.

Liza has been visited by her sister Lorna Luft in the Weill Cornell Hospital.

But she is unable to speak and there are fears she may never fully recover.

Last year, she suffered a potentially fatal brain infection and was taken to hospital in Florida.

Her illness led to a reconciliation with Lorna, with whom she had a six-year feud.

Last night, a friend of Liza's said: "She has been through a great deal.

"She's a fighter. She is strong and we hope she can overcome this latest setback. Our prayers are with Liza at this time."
