Fractal Design to Bring Natural-Media(TM) Rendering to Its 3D Applications

ThinkFish Technology To Be Incorporated in Ray Dream Studio

SCOTTS VALLEY, Calif., Jan. 21 /PRNewswire/ -- Fractal Design Corporation (Nasdaq: FRAC) announced today that it has signed a letter of intent to license nonphotorealistic rendering technology for its 3D product line from ThinkFish Productions of San Francisco. The technology will allow 3D objects created in Fractal's 3D product line -- Ray Dream Studio(TM) and Designer(TM), Poser(TM), and Detailer(TM) -- to be rendered using ThinkFish's LiveStyles(TM), a full line of real-time artistic and cartoon styles. The technology will first appear in a future release of Fractal's popular Ray Dream Designer and Ray Dream Studio. The inclusion of the LiveStyles(TM) technology will allow Fractal to offer the feel of Natural-Media(TM) in its 3D line.

Since the debut of Fractal Design Painter(R), the company has led the graphics industry in offering the look and feel of traditional media to computer artists. "This technology will soon bring Natural-Media to our entire 3D product line. Building on the foundation of Fractal Design Painter and Expression, Fractal is the only company with Natural-Media capabilities throughout the product line, reinforcing Fractal's premier position as the leading provider of creative tools for graphic professionals and hobbyists alike," said Eric Hautemont, president of Fractal.

"LiveStyles technology was designed to give 3D objects the look of having been created by traditional 2D artists," said Ben Wen, president of ThinkFish. "Because of its strength in both natural-media and 3D, Fractal was a natura and draws the key lines and strokes in the style of a fine artist. Each style is created to match a particular artistic or cartoon style, creating looks that are dramatically different from traditional photorealistic texture mapped styles of rendering. ThinkFish will release an expanding collection of add-on styles ranging from Picasso to Manga, from Klee to Cartoon.
