Four die as toxic sludge hits towns; ENVIRONMENT.

HUNGARY has declared a state of emergency after toxic sludge burst from a chemical plant, killing three adults and a child of three.

At least 120 people were injured in what one official called "an ecological disaster" that may threaten the Danube and other key rivers.

Several towns in three counties were engulfed in 35.3 million cubic feet of red sludge that spilled from the reservoir at the Ajkai Timfoldgyar plant in Ajka, 100 miles from Budapest.

The sludge is toxic if ingested and many of the injured sustained burns when it seeped through their clothes. Two people are in a life-threatening condition.

Hundreds of tons of plaster are being poured into the Marcal River in an attempt to stem the flow.
