Foundation work completed on Al Olaya Towers in Riyadh.

The Assistant Governor for Investment at the General Organization for Social Insurance (GOSI), Eng. Abdul Aziz Bin Abdullah Al Zaid has stated that work on the Abraj Al Olaya (Al Olaya Towers) project is continuing and is going on according to the specified program. Construction work on the foundations of the towers is complete and supporting walls would be the next stage.

The foundation work was the important stage. It was the biggest job of its kind so far done in the Kingdom, involving reinforced cement concrete work done in one phase. One foundation of the towers is 40 meters X 40 meters and average depth of 6 meters.

The foundation work required use of 9700 cubic meters of ready-mix concrete and a thousand tons of reinforcing steel bars of different sizes.

The job was done through continuous work in one 30 hour shift, for each foundation.

Eng. Al Zaid added that due to technical considerations for achieving highest possible strength, it was decided to do the job in one continuous shift so as to avoid any horizontal and vertical breaks.

In view of the hugeness of the job and the difficult terrain, the foundations being at a depth of 16 meters lower than the level of the ground.

A large number of heavy equipment and concrete mixers were also involved in carrying out the work. In this respect, a number of coordinating procedures were adapted with all those concerned with the work to ensure completion of the job with success, without any mishap or difficulties.

The number of concrete batches required for one foundation was 970, which were provided by using 80 concrete mixers for each foundation, in addition to 5 mobile pumps.

As for the timing for the job, 1.00 O'clock after midnight was selected to begin work as at that hour traffic is quite sparse around the site.
