Former church minister found guilty of bigamy urged to give himself up.

A FORMER church minister from Chester found guilty of entering into a bigamous marriage has been urged to hand himself in to face his sentence.

Roderick Sangster, 58, wed Janet Pollard (now Wallace) while still married to Jill Sangster (nee Jackson), leaving them both thousands of pounds in debt.

Sangster, whose last known address was the Crowne Plaza Hotel in Chester, did not turn up for his trial.

He had denied a charge of bigamy and a charge of forgery, but a jury at Warwick Crown Court yesterday found him guilty on both counts.

Judge Marten Coates adjourned sentencing to give police time to find Sangster. A bench warrant for his arrest was issued.

Prosecutor David Jones added: "We do not know where he has gone."

Later, Mrs Sangster, to whom he is still legally married, said: "It's just the start. We need to find him now."

Janet Wallace, whom Sangster married illegally, said: "I'm just delighted. I've come through this and my life is good.

"I will be delighted when he is brought to justice."

Detective Sergeant Cawail Wong, from Warwickshire Police, urged Sangster to hand himself in: "This has been a long investigation. The family and police are pleased with the outcome."

Sangster, who was once an officer in London's Metropolitan Police and a minister of the Scottish church, looked for financially secure, vulnerable women. Once he had taken their money and left them in debt, he moved on, Mr Jones told the jury.

Sangster married second wife Jill Sangster, in Florida on August 6 1996 after legally divorcing his first wife of 25 years, Frances Tait.

Mrs Tait, from Portlethen, Aberdeenshire in Scotland, said the couple married in December 1971 and had four children together.

Mrs Sangster, who lives in Perth, Scotland, was forced to declare herself bankrupt after discovering that he had run up a debt of pounds 30,000.

Sangster later worked in a hotel in Evesham, Worcestershire, and met Mrs Wallace, who was recovering from cancer, on the internet. He moved in with her in Leamington Spa, Warwickshire, after telling her he had divorced his wife.

They married at St Paul's Church in Leamington Spa on July 17 2004 before moving to Scotland.

Mrs Wallace, who lives in Flisk, near Newburgh in Fife, Scotland, said she was unaware he had forged her signature on a loan offer acceptance form for pounds 10,000 from Northern Rock until Sangster "ran away" in February last year.
