Former State Banking Commissioner To Lead Massachusetts Life Association.

Former Massachusetts Commissioner of Banks Andrew J. Calamare is the new president of the Life Insurance Association of Massachusetts. He succeeds William F. Carroll, who is retiring after nearly 15 years in that position.

Calamare, an attorney, was named the state's youngest bank commissioner in 1987 and served until 1990. He was named special counsel to the Rhode Island General Assembly in 1991 during that state's banking and credit union crisis. Since 1990, Calamare has been of counsel in the Boston law firm of Quinn and Morris, where he represented a wide variety of financial-service companies. His previous service in state government included positions as general counsel in the Executive Office of Consumer Affairs and Business Regulation and Deputy Commissioner of Banks and General Counsel.

Carroll, who became association president in 1985, previously had served as Rhode Island director of business regulation and had practiced law in Providence.

"These are exciting times in financial services. With financial modernization, I expect that we will continue to see changes in the marketplace. My objective as president of LIAM is to help ensure a healthy and competitive financial-services industry in Massachusetts," Calamare said.

"After 15 very satisfying years representing a great industry I look forward to a change of pace, including a return to the practice of law and teaching," Carroll said.

Founded in 1974, LIAM's membership is made up of the leading life insurance companies doing business in Massachusetts.
