St Anselm's College in Wirral announced that Robert Browne had resigned "for personal reasons beyond our control" last November.
But the ECHO can now reveal he is a paedophile who amassed a sick collection of child sex abuse images and disgusting animal porn.
Browne, 45, taught at an all girl's school in Sussex before joining the prestigious grammar school for boys in Birkenhead.
Liverpool Crown Court heard police in Ireland discovered a USB stick containing disturbing photos, which Browne left at a hostel.
Simon Duncan, prosecuting, said they informed Merseyside Police, who raided his home in Clifton Road, Tranmere on October 7 last year.
He said: "Two laptops were seized, along with quantities of children's clothing, including school uniforms."
Browne admitted possessing 1,468 illegal photographs of children, plus 80 extreme porn images, showing people having sex with animals.
He accepted downloading 38 Category A - the most serious category - plus 44 Category B and 1,386 Category C indecent images.
Mr Duncan said: "None of them involved particularly young children, perhaps in keeping with what the defendant said about his interests.
"It was consistent with his interest in particularly school girls in uniform. He said he was interested in females aged eight to 17.

Mr Duncan said police were unaware of any complaints regarding inappropriate behaviour by Browne towards pupils at his past schools.
David Woods, defending, said Browne, who had no previous convictions, did not want to minimise his crimes.
He said: "He accepts wholeheartedly that what he has done is wrong. He is ashamed of his behaviour.
"He was not a teacher for the purpose of facilitating interests, nor did he do anything that would take his deviant interests any further.
"He of course will no longer be able to teach any children, although he believed he was a good teacher."
Mr Woods said "extremely remorseful" Browne had since been working at a call centre and had quit drinking.
He said the paedophile completed a 10-week sex offenders programme with the Lucy Faithful Foundation at his own expense.
Browne also funded a 12-step Sex and Love Addicts Anonymous course and paid to see a psychologist.
Judge Anil Murray said Browne, who also collected printed non-indecent photos of schoolgirls, admitted being "addicted".
A pre-sentence report recommended Browne should be spared jail and Judge Murray told him his behaviour since his arrest suggested it was "worth giving you a chance to mend your ways".
He handed him 12 months in jail, suspended for two years, plus a 60-day Rehabilitation Activity Requirement.
