Former Czech President Vaclav Havel has died following a long illness.

According to state television, the 75-year-old was comforted on his death-bed by his wife Dagmara and several nuns.

The President, formerly a popular playwright, was the tenth and final president of Czechoslovakia up until the dissolution of the country in 1992/93, and the first president of the Czech Republic upon its formation.

Renowned worldwide for his works on communism and his leadership following the fall of the soviet union, he was several times decorated for overseeing the peaceful, popular and friendly breakup of Czechoslovakia - at a time when the breakup of several other former soviet bloc countries was marred by violence.
