Foreign policy for the naive.

On August 13, 2004, Lt-Gen. Moshe Yaalon, Israel's senior army commander, suggested that Israel could cede the Golan Heights to Syria in any future peace agreement. In a newspaper interview, the general explained that the army could defend Northern Israel without the Golan Heights being a military requirement. Before 1967, it belonged to Syria (Toronto Star, August 14, 2004).

The general forgot to mention that some 13,000 Israeli settlers now live on these Golan Heights; they will see to it that their territory will never be returned to Syria.
