Foreign ex-cons hunt over.

A SPECIAL squad set up to track down foreign convicts freed from jail has been disbanded.

The team has netted the most serious of the 1,023 ex-cons, among them 74 killers, rapists and paedophiles.

Seven not traced are believed to be dead or to have left the UK.

Home Secretary John Reid said: "We have got the vast majority of them now under lock and key."

His predecessor Charles Clarke lost his job after revelations that the ex-prisoners had served their time but were not kicked out of Britain.

Mr Reid, criticised for police disbanding the squad, said: "I think most people recognise that we put enormous efforts into this but it isn't possible always to accomplish 100 per cent of everything. I'm the Home Secretary, not the Wizard of Oz."
