Ford to debut sport utility vehicle with enhanced gas mileage.
Ford Japan Ltd. said Thursday it will release the Ford Explorer XLT EcoBoost sport utility vehicle on Feb. 25, featuring a 25 percent improvement in gas mileage and greater horsepower than the preceding Explorer XLT SUV.
The subsidiary of Ford Motor Co. said the new Explorer XLT is equipped with a downsized 2000 cc turbocharged engine with 243 horsepower, 30 more than the 4000 cc non-turbocharged engine of the preceding Explorer XLT model.
The new SUV, with three rows of seats that can accommodate up to seven passengers, is the first front-wheel-drive Ford Explorer model. Past Ford Explorer series have been fitted with four-wheel-drive mechanisms.
The basic grade Explorer XLT will retail for 4.4 million yen. The model is eligible for the Japanese government's subsidy program to encourage the purchase of environmentally friendly, highly fuel-efficient automobiles, it added.
