Football: OUT OF AFRICA AS IBRAHIMA GOES TO DROGS.
DROGHEDA United have signed former Paris St Germain and Lens striker Ibrahima Thiam Iyane.
The towering 6'6 frontman was on trial for the last few weeks but impressed on the champion's pre-season training camp in Spain.
Manager Paul Doolin has now secured the Senegalese's signature but must await international clearance before playing the 26-year-old.
"Everyone here has been very good, the players are all friendly and it is a good team," said the former Senegal under-23 international. "I'm looking forward to the new season."
Iyane most recently played with Belgian side UR Namur and was also on the books of Bulgarian outfit PFC Dobrudja and IF Stromsgodset of Norway. He represented his country during the 2004 Olympic qualifiers.
"He's a giant, but he's very mobile too, and he adds something different to the team," said Doolin, stressing his new signing was more than just a target man.
Drogheda also moved to ease their goalkeeper crisis by signing Jamie Ewings on a one-year year deal.
Ewings was on trial and caught the eye in a recent friendly with local rivals Dundalk.
Dan Connor, the club's number one goalkeeper, is recovering from surgery and will be sidelined until May.
Mikko Vilmunen has filled his shoes in the meantime and the Finn will be first choice this season until Connor's return.
