Football: New ball game for Star; UNIBOND LEAGUE Division One North.

Byline: MALCOLM PRATT

NEWCASTLE Blue Star play their first ever game in the UniBond League Division One North tomorrow when they visit Bamber Bridge, with director of football Bob Morton insists they are up for the challenge (writes MALCOLM PRATT).

Morton (pictured below) said: "It's a whole new ball game for us. We have a new chairman, a new ground and we have signed several players, so we relish the opportunity to play at a higher level."

David Thompson has taken over as chairman and Blue Star will share the Newcastle Falcons ground at Kingston Park having moved from the Wheatsheaf Ground.

On the playing front, Morton reports that 90% of the staff are newcomers.

"We have brought in experienced players who have played at a good level. We aim to be a force in the UniBond League. The chairman and the club are very ambitious and want the climb to continue."

Three players Daniel Lawson, David Nicholls, Lee Novak and Darren Casson have joined from Gretna who last season won the Scottish League First Division title.

David Critchlow has joined from Newcastle United and Kevin Morton has come in after a time with Grimsby Town.

Other newcomers include Sean Davies (Scarborough), Chris Emms and Scott Nicholson (Billingham Town), Paul Hutchinson (Newcastle Benfield BP), David McTiernan (Whitby Town), Leon Scott (Dunston Fed), Craig Tate (Seaham RS), Gareth Bainbridge (Durham City) and Ryan Bell (Ashington).

However, Chris Fawcett is an absentee and could be out for at least six months after suffering a knee ligament injury.

"He's a good player and will be missed but we have a big squad who have performed well preseason. Going to Bamber Bridge is obviously new but we are hopeful of claiming a good result," said Morton.
