Football: KEELY PRAISES IRISH CALL FOR SUPER KEV.

Byline: MICHAEL SCULLY

DERMOT Keely praised Kevin Doherty on his call-up to the Irish U21 squad and then said: "This is a real boost for young players coming back from England."

Doherty has developed into one of Shelbourne's best defenders since he joined the Reds in the summer following his release from Liverpool.

And his displays for his new club were recognised yesterday when U21 boss Don Givens named him in the panel for a four-day training camp at Bisham Abbey at the end of the month.

Givens had lost four players from his original panel of 20 - Brendan McGill (Sunderland), Patrick McCourt (Rochdale), Dwayne Mattis (Huddersfield Town) and Graham Barrett (Arsenal) are all unavailable.

And the manager called in Doherty, Joe Gamble of Reading, Paul Heffernan of Notts County and Gavin Melaugh (Aston Villa).

"It shows that there's life after England," said Keely, who has watched Doherty develop since bringing him to Tolka Park.

Doherty signed a new contract with Shels recently, along with Owen Heary and Wes Houlihan.

Brian Shelley of Bohemians, UCD's Robbie Martin and Shamrock Rovers' Richie Byrne were originally named in the squad for the get-together, which takes place between January 27-30.
