Football: Holl over for David.

FEYENOORD have resigned themselves to losing Republic of Ireland striker David Connolly after he failed to respond to a deadline regarding a new contract.

The former Watford hitman looks likely to move away from De Kuip after failing to agree to the deal with the Rotterdam giants who finished second in the Eredivisie last season.

Connolly has struggled to hold down a first-team place at Feyenoord since arriving in Holland in 1997 and spent the 1999-2000 on loan at Toto Divisie side Excelsior.

However, technical director Rob Baan was keen to retain his services but could not match the 24-year-old's wage demands.

"We thought that we made him an excellent offer, but David must think differently," he said.

"We agreed he would respond to us before a certain date. That date is past and all we know is from statements that Connolly finds our offer ridiculous."

Connolly has already knocked back offers from AZ Alkmaar and UEFA Cup hopefuls Roda JC.
