Football: CELTIC HOLD POOR GLENS; GLENAVON 0 LURGAN CELTIC 0.

Byline: BILL IRELAND

GLENAVON are still in the Nationwide Irish Cup but failed to dispose of their junior derby rivals Lurgan Celtic at the first attempt.

The historic Mourneview Park tie was watched by more than 2,000 fans.

The match had an across-the-divide political and religious element and, although it ended inconclusively, football was the real winner.

Supporters from both sides provided a carnival atmosphere and behaved impeccably.

Celtic manager Barry Douglas said: "I am proud of my team. We will be coming back to have a go and I intend to play with three up."

Celtic have a reputation for being cup specialists at their own level and were never overawed, becoming more confident as the tie progressed.

They might have been sunk without trace if Glenavon had been more decisive in front of goal.

Skipper Gerard McMahon might have had a hat-trick in the early stages.

But Glenavon, who failed to score for the third match in a row, again showed they do not possess a cutting edge.

This frailty nearly proved costly when former player John Campbell almost broke the deadlock with an ambitious overhead kick.
