SIR ALEX FERGUSON has lined up Denmark star Dennis Rommedahl in a pounds 5million cut-price deal as Real Madrid close in on capturing David Beckham.

PSV Eindhoven winger Rommedahl, one of the quickest players in Europe, is seen by Manchester United boss Fergie as the ideal replacement for England captain Becks as he plans a huge summer shake-up at Old Trafford.

Beckham, Ryan Giggs and goalkeeper Fabien Barthez are the most likely casualties with Ferguson determined to make up ground in the Champions League after Wednesday's exit to Real Madrid.

Real's determination to land Beckham, a move which could net them a stunning pounds 100m in revenue from the untapped Asian market, could

end up funding Fergie's rebuilding plan. Portuguese winger Ricardo Quaresma is a target while Leeds goalkeeper Paul Robinson could replace error-prone Barthez.

Brazil's World Cup winner Ronaldinho, Real Sociedad's Turkish striker Nihat Kahveci and Barcelona's Patrick Kluivert have also been offered to United.

Real president Florentino Perez will be encouraged in his efforts to land Beckham after the midfield star was left on the bench on Wednesday night - and at Arsenal last week.

While he came on to score two goals, including a stunning free-kick, against Real, Beckham will be distressed at being overlooked for two of the biggest games of the season.

And if he is left out again against Tottenham on Sunday it could tip the balance in Real's favour. World Cup star Rommedahl, 24, and Ronaldinho are priorities for the United boss as he looks to rebuild.

Rommedahl's electric pace made him a huge star at the World Cup and Aston Villa made enquiries about him but he decided to stay in Holland.

But Fergie's spending will not stop there as Portuguese winger Quaresma is another summer transfer target. His agent yesterday claimed United and Sporting Lisbon have already begun negotiations.

Quaresma, 19, has been tracked by United for most of the season and impressed for Portugal under-21s earlier this month when he destroyed England.

Sporting's price demands may be a sticking point as they want in excess of pounds 10m.

Erratic French keeper Barthez is likely to be sold with England prospect Robinson a strong possibility to take over as cash-strapped Leeds would listen to offers.
