Football: Valley of death for Hammers; PARDS WINS BATTLE AT THE BOTTOM.

ALAN Curbishley was last night given the dreaded vote of confidence after being humiliated at The Valley.

West Ham fans turned on their manager, chanting the name of Alan Pardew - the man who was sacked by Upton Park chairman Eggert Magnusson just over two months ago and who inspired Charlton to the 4-0 victory over their relegation rivals yesterday.

But after holding his head in his hands for most of the game, Magnusson gave his backing to beleaguered Curbs.

A West Ham spokesman said: "Alan's future is not in doubt. The chairman is fully committed to Alan."

But Magnusson gave Pardew the same backing - a fortnight before axing him and replacing him with Curbishley.
