Football: United's goal blitz sees off Canaries.

Newcastle United Youths 3

Norwich City Youths 1

NEWCASTLE hit back strongly to win with three goals in 12 first-half minutes after going behind to Norwich in a Youth Cup fourth round thriller at St James's Park last night.

Centre-forward Andy Carroll hit the target twice and Kazenga LuaLua once as the Canaries were torn apart in a hectic spell of inventive attacking football.

And although United slackened to let City back into the contest in the second half they kept their goal intact.

United put Norwich under siege in the opening stages but were stunned when Kris Renton set up unmarked Chris Martin to slide a 24th-minute shot into the right corner of the net.

The Magpies' 15-year-old striker Ryan Donaldson, scorer of both goals in the 2-1 Academy victory at Sunderland on Saturday, had earlier missed two golden chances although at the other end only a brilliant Mark Cook diving save had kept out a goalbound 22-yard shot from Martin.

Norwich keeper Steven Arnold pulled off a similarly brilliant save from Kazenga LuaLua moments after Norwich's goal, then somehow saved a point-blank Darren Lough shot with his left foot.

But in the 34th minute Carroll - who sat with LuaLua on the first-team bench in the FA Cup at Birmingham on Saturday - levelled with a tremendous 22-yard drive into the bottom-right corner.

LuaLua sent Carroll through only for the tall striker to shoot straight at Arnold five minutes later, but Norwich cracked under the pressure on 42 minutes when Donaldson's persistence and pace set up LuaLua to beat Arnold from an acute angle on the left.

With City on the ropes, Carroll nodded home a Lough corner in injury time to set their opponents a massive second-half task.

Although United were slack at times after the interval, Norwich were unable to take advantage and it was Carroll who continued to prove the greatest goal threat with a shot that shaved the right-hand post.
