Football: So who's to blame for this one, Roy?; CHAMPIONS LEAGUE SECOND PHASE, 1ST LEG TIES FC PORTO 2 MANCHESTER UTD 1 RED CARD SHAME FOR KEANE.

Byline: DAVID McDONNELL

ROY KEANE was sent off as Manchester United's Champions League tie ended in disgrace and a bitter war of words last night.

Keane was dismissed in the 86th minute for deliberately stamping on Porto keeper Vitor Baia and will be hit by a one-match ban which could be raised to three if UEFA step in.

And furious United boss Sir Alex Ferguson refused to shake hands with Porto coach Jose Mourinho at the final whistle after accusing the UEFA Cup holders of consistently diving.

But it was Keane's dismissal which capped a miserable night for United, especially in light of the Old Trafford captain's recent comments in which he has accused the club's young players of slacking in training, tipped bitter rivals Arsenal to go through the season unbeaten and criticised United's "jittery" defence.

Now Keane has let the club down and only has himself to blame.

Fergie admitted his skipper had to go but insisted Baia had overreacted to the challenge.

"I've seen the incident on video and Roy definitely caught their goalkeeper," said Fergie.

"But I think their keeper made more of it than he should. It wasn't a malicious challenge - that's not the sort of thing Roy would do.

"But I can understand why the linesman flagged and the referee did what he did.

"Any team would miss Roy but we've got the players to come in and score the goals we need in the second leg."

Porto boss Mourinho was angry with Fergie for refusing to shake his hand and had some harsh words for

the Old Trafford boss. Mourinho said: "Alex Ferguson spoke to me in the tunnel and said Baia had overreacted.

"I disagreed with him and told him to look at the video. I only hope he will apologise to me having seen it. His reaction was not a correct one but I understand he was emotional because his team were dominated by a side who have 10 per cent of their budget.

"United have the best players in the world but we were much better and should have scored more. What I will promise is that we will not go to Manchester and play defensive football."

Keane's red card was the 11th of his United career and will rule him out of the return leg at Old Trafford in a fortnight. Fergie was angered by what he deemed diving by Porto's players and the United boss said: "I think referees should have videos of the teams before games to prepare them for diving."

United took the lead in the 14th minute through Quinton Fortune but Porto were level when Benni McCarthy equalised on 29 minutes.

McCarthy sealed the win for Porto with a header in the 77th minute before Keane's moment of madness capped a disastrous night for United.
