Berwick Rangers 3

Annan Athletic 0

BERWICK boss Alan McGonigal heaved a sigh of relief and declared "This result has been a long time coming" after Berwick beat Annan Athletic.

And no one could argue with him.

The victory over the league newcomers at Shielfield Park was the first since the opening league match of the season - as well as the first clean sheet in a massive 42 games and the biggest win since August 2006.

But McGonigal insisted "I have said on a number of occasions I think we are heading in the right direction. I looked at this game and the next against Elgin at home again this week and thought to myself these are must-win games and this result certainly sets us up nicely."

Jamie Ewart slotted Rangers in front in 20 minutes courtesy of a Jim Lister header across the goal face from a Stuart Callaghan free-kick.

In the second half John Dillon took charge from the penalty spot. After jinking his way into the box only to see his net-bound shot handled beside an upright by Gary Brown, who was redcarded, he scored on 67 minutes.

And 12 minutes later he left the keeper helpless again from the spot after Lister was clearly pushed homing in on the target.
