PORT Vale's biggest money signing of the summer was not a player but a pounds 20,000 lawnmower.

Whether that speak volumes for the predicament the Valiants find themselves in remains to be seen but at least they'll have the neatest cut pitch in Division Two. But it's not only the grass that has been cut down to size, so has Brian Horton's team with the implications of administration hitting hard.

Out have gone Matt Carragher, Phil Charnock, Sean McClare, Paul Byrne, Rae Ingram, John Durnin and Ian Brightwell (the latter taking on a coaching role). In comes George Pilkington from Everton, Adrian Littlejohn from Sheffield United while the most eye-opening deal is the recruitment of ex-Austrian international Andreas Lipa.
