Football: Newcastle sign pounds 8.5m wonderkid.

NEWCASTLE last night splashed out pounds 8.5million for a teenager who couldn't get a game at the World Cup.

Boss Bobby Robson beat a host of rivals to sign Portuguese star Hugo Viana from Sporting Lisbon.

The 19-year-old midfield man agreed the move after undergoing a medical on Tyneside yesterday.

Viana has signed a five-year contract and becomes Britain's most expensive teenager, beating the pounds 6m Coventry paid for Robbie Keane in August 1999.

The Under-21 star was included in Portugal's World Cup squad but never featured on the park.

Last night Newcastle chairman Freddy Shepherd said: "Hugo is an exciting attack-minded player and the concensus is he is the best young player in the world."
