Football: MAN UTD FOR SALE.

Byline: By MARTIN LIPTON

THE GLAZER family are ready to listen to offers for Manchester United - potentially throwing the club into more off-field turmoil.

Less than three years after Malcolm Glazer finally won his controversial takeover battle in a deal that cost an astonishing pounds 831 million, United's future is up in the air again.

Boardroom figures are privately conceding that a sale in the short-term is now likely after the Glazers realised they had not bought the cash cow they believed the club would be.

And if the Glazers do decide to sell, it will guarantee a period of uncertainty about the long-term future of the club just as manager Sir Alex Ferguson aims to build on their Premiership triumph.

City of London financial sources confirmed last night that tentative feelers have started going out from Old Trafford because of the cost of the Glazer takeover package.

Malcolm Glazer eventually paid pounds 790m for the club, plus legal fees of another pounds 41.3m, in order to win his battle for control of United.
