Football: Life begins at 50 for Fairwater.

Byline: Mark Bloom

IF ever a team lived up to its name, that team is Fairwater Old Boys FC.

Indeed, so keen are they to prove their is life beyond 40, that four of their squad are still regularly taking to the field having hit the wrong side of 50!

But their results show there is no substitute for experience, for with an average age of 44, the Third Division Cardiff & District League outfit are pushing hard for promotion. All of which means they are among the oldest swingers in town, with DaveVen (59), Peter Searle (54), Jonny Rankmora (52) and John Oliver (52) flying the flag for the over 50s.

Craig Baldwin, a very junior 35-year-old, said: ``We've got our kit sponsored by Andy Williams Motors, though we did try Help The Aged but they could not do anything for us.

``It's all a bit of fun and we train once a week to keep the circulation going.

``You won't find them running down the wing like Ryan Giggs or putting in tackles like Roy Keane, but they know what to do when the ball's at their feet.

``We have players in their 30s, 40s and 50s and it's a strange sight to see at the club on a Saturday night.

``While some of the younger lads head off into town, the older ones move on to the skittle ally for a couple of rolls before going home to their wives ``We haven't had any red cards yet though a couple of yellows have been shown, but at their age I'm surprised they can tell the difference!''
