Football: It's Rioch or Vogts.

FORMER World Cup skipper Bruce Rioch is involved in an 11th hour battle with Berti Vogts to become the new Scotland boss.

The SFA have drawn up the shortest of short lists in their search for a replacement for Craig Brown, who stepped down after Scotland's failure to qualify for Japan and South Korea.

And Rioch, who was captain during the nation's ill-fated Argentina World Cup campaign in 1978, has emerged as a shock rival to ex-Germany boss Vogts.

The former Arsenal manager, who is currently keeping his hand in with non-League side Gresley Rovers, is seriously challenging Vogts.

Rioch has admitted his interest, saying: "I would relish being involved with the national team. It is a very valued position."

The SFA have conducted a series of interviews and are now torn between Vogts and Rioch.
