Football: Gowzer's winner pure sub genius - AIRDRIE.

THAT great enigma known as the supersub has found its latest, and maybe even greatest exponent, Airdrie's Alan Gow.

Defined as any player adept at altering the course of a game when introduced, Gow fits the description perfectly now and again.

Gowzer's mazy running often ends in frustration for the Diamonds' support but the air of excitement and expectancy he engenders is a gift shared by very few in the game, past or present.

And so to Glebe Park. Down to 10 men and a place in the Bell's Challenge Cup Final a steadily fading dream, he was the last throw of the dice for Sandy Stewart.

Then, just eight minutes from penalty shoot-out hell, Andy picks up the ball inside his own half, setting off on a journey that will take him past five or six defenders before slotting it past the keeper.

Dick Campbell rated it higher than Archie Gemmill's World Cup classic against Holland and few Airdrie fans will ever have witnessed anything like it.
