Football: Foster insists he wants the No.1 United spot for keeps.

Byline: STEVE BATES

BEN FOSTER has thrown down the gauntlet to Sir Alex Ferguson by insisting he won't play second fiddle to Edwin van der Sar at Old Trafford next season, writes STEVE BATES.

Manchester United chief Ferguson is recalling Foster back to the club this summer after allowing the youngster two seasons on loan at Watford.

But Foster has impressed so much that he is in England's squad to face Spain on Wednesday.

The keeper said: "The past couple of years have been brilliant because I've played regular first-team football so it would be very difficult to go back to being on the bench.

"I am ambitious, I want to achieve things and be the No.1 goalkeeper wherever I am."
