He was a van driver and painter-decorator when he began playing with non-league Southall, including playing in the FA Vase final at Wembley, and Hayes, before being signed by QPR in March 1987 for pounds 15,000.

Apr 1987: Full league debut for QPR as sub v Coventry.

Feb 1993: Scores on his England debut in 6-0 demolition of San Marino in a World Cup qualifier.

July1995: Signs for Newcastle in a pounds 6million deal.

1995-96: Ends first Magpies season with 25 league goals.

July 1997: Joins Tottenham, the club he supported as a boy, for pounds 6million.
