Football: Ego kids let down Bonhof.

MOTHERWELL boss Terry Butcher last night launched an astonishing broadside at Scotland's Under-21 players as he defended babes' boss Rainer Bonhof.

The German quit his post last Friday after three years in charge.

But blazing Butcher reckons his job was made a misery by big-headed kids who didn't appreciate pulling on a dark blue jersey.

Speaking in his programme notes ahead of yesterday's clash with Inverness, the former England captain said: "I'd like to place on record my thanks to Rainer.

"He's always acted in a gentlemanly and helpful way with all the managers who have tried to encourage and assist the younger generation in understanding the giant leap from club to international football"Unfortunately he also had to deal with some of the country's most arrogant and ignorant young men who do not see selection for their national team as an honour and privilege.

"Herr Bonhof has never divulged the identity of any one of these egotistical swellheads.

"But his job at times was made nearly impossible by their attitude and performances.

"I'm only talking about a very few but this minority dragged down the rest.

"Bonhof deserves real praise for sticking to his principles, not condemnation for his results
