Football: Carl misses big chance; Sheff U 0 Gillingham 0.

Byline: Lawrie MADDEN

UNITED striker Carl Asaba had the chance to silence the Gillingham fans who booed their former favourite every time he touched the ball.

The former Gills striker burst through two minutes from time but with only keeper Vince Bartram to beat, he blasted his left-foot shot wide of the target.

United almost went ahead after three minutes when Asaba seized on a poor clearance but struck his shot high over the bar.

Then Peter Ndlovu went on a stunning run from inside his own half but his shot was weak and easily held by Bartram.

United dominated for long periods but could break down a tough-tackling Gillingham side.

Gillingham almost snatched victory when after a well-worked move Paul Smith saw his shot fly high over the bar and then, with time running out, Asaba missed the best chance of the match
