Football: CITY IN FURY AT RULING; Highland & Minors.

FURIOUS Elgin City are ready to rock north football by taking legal action against the Highland League.

The Boroughbriggs club made the threat yesterday after a late-night league management meeting decided to take no action on their plea for re-instatement as 1992-93 champions.

Elgin, managed then by John Teasdale, were stripped of the title after league chiefs ruled they were guilty of "bringing the game into disrepute".

City were accused of manipulating fixtures to avoid suspensions to the player-manager and John McDonald.

Champions Peterhead were cleared after almost identical allegations.

Elgin president Ben Strachan said: "We are left with no other alternative but to take legal advice."

This controversy completely overshadowed preparations for the start of the new end-of-season event, the Tennent's Highland League Cup.

Elgin, defending the trophy they lifted when it was last competed for in September 1997, are at home to Nairn in section three, where Forres also entertain Lossiemouth.

Section one sees little Rothes play Keith, Fraserburgh and Peterhead.

Keith should beat Rothes, but Fraserburgh will be out to deny Peterhead.
