WIGAN chief Dave Whelan has called for lifetime bans to be meted out to anyone in football found guilty of taking a bung.

Whelan fears money is in danger of killing the game he loves. His cure for the ills currently plaguing football are:

For bung-busters to hand down sine die bans for anyone who is found to have succumbed to corruption.

For clubs to be relegated if their chairman or directors are found to be involved in illegal payments.

For total transparency to become an official part of the regulations governing transfers.

For a wage cap to be introduced across Europe to safeguard the level of competition in the game.

Whelan, who goes back to Ewood Park today when Wigan face Blackburn, said: "We must ban the people who are caught being dishonest - and ban them for life.

"It should be the end of their career in the game.

"If a chairman is ever found accepting a bung then his club should be relegated either one or two divisions.

"Bungs have no part in this game."
