Football: AMSTERBAMS; Gerrard and Mellor sent off as Reds lose plot in Holland.

GALATASARAY 2

LIVERPOOL 1

LIVERPOOL had two players ordered off as they fell to Galatasaray in the Amsterdam Tournament last night

Steven Gerrard and Neil Mellor walked towards the end of the game and when Vladimir Smicer had to go off injured, it meant the Reds had only eight men left on the field.

Sub Mellor was given a straight red card for a wild tackle on Gabriel Tamas only minutes after going on.

Gerrard, who had been booked in an earlier flare-up, saw red for dissent in the wake of the Mellor dismissal.

It was a bitter ending to a disappointing game for Gerard Houllier's side but he tried to remain upbeat.

The Liverpool boss said: "I didn't think we played too badly, although I know we can do better.

"They had three chances in the whole of the game and scored with two of them."

Galatasaray went ahead in the 21st minute. Hakan Sukur beat two defenders and set up Brazilian Jose Batista to slot the ball past Chris Kirkland

Minutes later, Czech forward Smicer almost got the equaliser, dribbling past three defenders before shooting wide.

But Smicer did help to make it 1-1 in the 36th minute.

Emile Heskey, who had been almost invisible up until this point, was the scorer with a firm header from Smicer's cross, giving keeper Faryd Mondragon no chance.

Galatasaray regained the lead three minutes later thanks to a brilliant 30-yard free-kick by another Brazilian, Cesar Prates, whose curling effort left the keeper clawing at fresh air.

Liverpool were desperately unlucky not to get back on terms in the 65th minute

Florent Sinama-Pongolle got behind the defence and past Mondragon but, as he shot for the unguarded goal, Batista flew back at top speed to block in spectacular style.

Houllier added: "Our far East trip is catching up on us. Some of the players looked drained."
