Food for thought.

First Lady Michelle Obama is on a mission She wants kids in the U.S. to know that healthy food is not only good for you--it makes you feel good. So, with help from local schoolchildren and other people, she has planted a garden on the White House lawn.

"My hope is that through [the garden]," the First Lady says, "we can continue to make the connection between what we eat and how we feel, and how healthy we are."

The White House garden has 55 varieties of fruits and vegetables in all, including peas, broccoli, and carrots, as well as raspberries, blueberries, and blackberries.

Cierra Beatty was among the students who helped Obama plant and harvest the garden's fruits and vegetables. "Getting into making a garden with beautiful vegetables has made me think about the choices I have with what I put into my mouth," says Cierra, a fifth-grader at Bancroft Elementary School in Washington, D.C. "It has made me think again about why it is so important to grow and eat fresh foods that have the right Mnds of vitamins in them to make us healthy."

The First Lady hopes that the garden will inspire kids everywhere to make healthier choices. "Nearly a third of the children in this country are either overweight or obese," she says. "Too many kids are consuming high-calorie food with low nutritional value."

What You Can Do

How can you eat healthier-even if you don't live in the White House? Here are some things you can do:

* Eliminate processed and sugary foods from your cupboards.

* Introduce more fruits and vegetables into your diet.

* Grow herbs on your windowsill.

* Bake chicken instead of frying it.

* Snack on an apple or a banana instead of cookies or potato chips.

* Prepare meals with fresh food instead of canned or frozen food.

Making small changes in the Obama household has already done wonders for her own family, according to the First Lady.

"By adding more fresh produce for our family," she says, "Barack, the girls, and [I] all started to notice over a very short period of time that we felt much better, and we had more energy."
