Following Washington's suit, Guatemala opens embassy in Jerusalem.
RAMALLAH, May 16 (KUNA) -- Guatemala followed the United States of America's suit on Wednesday opening an embassy in the holy city of Jerusalem, according to the Israeli media. Inauguration of the Guatemalan embassy in the sacred city came two days after the US opened its diplomatic mission's headquarters there. Several nations, namely Washington's close ally Britain, have announced no desire to follow the American step. Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas has labelled the American embassy in the ancient city "a slummy American settlement" and declared that he no longer viewed the US administration as a credible mediator for peace talks. The American step has coincided with widespread confrontations between Israeli troops and Palestinians marking the 70th anniversary of "Al-Nakba" -- meaning in Arabic catastrophe in reference to the plight of hundreds of thousands of Palestinians who were driven out of their homeland with Israel's proclamation in 1948. The violence has claimed 62 martyrs among the Palestinians. (end) nq.rk
