Follow the code or get off your bike!

FOLLOWING another successful Tour de Yorkshire I see our local cyclists are once again taking to the roads.

But what gives them the idea that it is acceptable to ride in peloton formation on our congested roads? This morning such a formation, three abreast, approached me in Paddock, and I had little room for manoeuvre in order to avoid the outside riders, with cars parked typically on both sides of the road.

The Highway Code is quite clear about this: 'Cyclists should never ride more than two abreast and ride in single file on narrow or busy roads.'.

I cannot think of many roads in this area to which that does not apply.

Perhaps the cycling clubs might encourage their members to adopt a safer way of getting round our area.
