Follett's Union Telnet QuickLink Enables Remote Access to Union Databases.

Follett Software has announced Union Telnet QuickLink software, which gives patrons remote access to union databases that contain the resources of multiple libraries, enabling patrons to search the combined databases of all libraries in the union instead of having to physically visit multiple locations. Follett Software Company's Union Telnet QuickLink takes this convenience and increased access to information even further.

"Our new Union Telnet QuickLink product brings remote searching to a reality," said Steve Siegel, director of product management at Follett Software Company. "Patrons who have Internet access and a telnet client can search the union database from their own workstation at home, in the classroom, or wherever it may be. And they can access the database 14 hours a day. It's convenient for everyone, and it makes the materials within the libraries more accessible. With Union Telnet QuickLink, patrons aren't constrained by the limited hours of library operation nor do they waste valuable time waiting for an available workstation."

Union Telnet QuickLink gives patrons read-only access to the union's OPAC, so librarians have no need to worry about system security, according to Follett. This prevents them from viewing or altering other portions of a library's system.

From the program's automatic startup feature through its extensive searching capabilities, Follett has designed Union Telnet QuickLink to be easy to use; Its user interface automatically displays after a patron logs onto the Union Telnet QuickLink server, with no need to complete additional steps to enter the system. The program lists all commands accessible from each screen up front, alerting users of all available options. And, intuitive screens with context-sensitive help facilitate the searching process and make it easier for remote searchers to understand how to find information within the OPAC. Patrons can also determine which member library has the desired materials, because the program displays each material's local call number and the number of copies the member library owns.

Union Telnet QuickLink features flexible searching. Patrons can search by title, author, call number, subject, series, and keyword. Patrons also benefit from the program's support of Boolean searching terms AND, OR, and NOT and the displaying of SEE and SEE ALSO references. They can search more efficiently for specific information and access related information more quickly, encouraging more effective use of the union's collection and the connection of topics.

Union Telnet QuickLink consists of new server software that interfaces seamlessly with Follett Software's Union Catalog Plus. It operates on the Windows platform and requires a direct Internet connection. Patrons must have a telnet client program to access the Union Catalog Plus OPAC.
