HE exasperation felt across the region over the delays in settling the future of children's heart surgery is understandable.

As supporters of the unit in Leeds General Infirmary continue to seek the support of the courts in their bid to preserve its role, the centre in Newcastle is developing its capabilities.

While a decision will be made eventually by the Secretary of State, he should not need Sir Leonard Fenwick to remind him how much these uncertainties are absorbing in terms of time and money, or that both are in very short supply.

With the Newcastle unit's value proven, now would be a good time to let it focus on saving lives.
